Crozet, Virginia is a growing community in Albemarle County, located at the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains.
On October 4, 2020 Bishop Knestout celebrated Mass in Crozet and officially named our mission community Our Lady of the Rosary. We are continuing to work to become a Parish. The elevation to mission status has allowed the community to celebrate weekly Masses; to offer all the sacraments, among them baptisms and marriages; to begin a religious education program; and to begin the search for land suitable to build a church on
Our Lady of the Rosary is currently a mission of Church of the Incarnation parish in Charlottesville.
Our History:
On December 15, 2013, Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo gave local Catholics and Holy Comforter Catholic Church pastor, Fr. Joseph Mary Lukyamuzi permission to begin holding a once-a-month Mass in Crozet in January 2014. This decision was designed to test community support for a Catholic church. Local Catholics formed the Crozet Mass Committee and Masses began in March 2014, on the second Sunday of the month, at The Field School. The Crozet Catholic Mass was an immediate success, and the first Mass attracted 250 people. Eventually, in 2017, we began celebrating one Sunday Mass weekly at the Field School. The concern regarding Covid 19 and the pandemic in Spring 2020, impacted our ability to hold Mass in person at the Field School, and we had to view Mass via livestream. In July 2020, we began celebrating Mass weekly at Crozet Baptist Church.
Update to COVID-19 protocols: The CDC and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) have revised guidance involving the wearing of masks in certain “public indoor settings.” Within the Diocese, public indoor settings include public Mass. The VDH guidance recommends that vaccinated individuals should wear a mask in geographical areas of substantial and high transmission. Currently, most areas of the Diocese are in substantial or high transmission, including Albemarle County. While not mandated by the VDH nor required by Diocesan policy, parishioners are encouraged to wear masks at Mass and other appropriate public indoor settings as prescribed by the VDH. Charity and kindness toward those who choose to wear a mask or not, for a variety of reasons, is of utmost importance. We do not ask for proof of vaccination or proof of medical exemptions from wearing a mask at Mass. Note also that we have designated the upper balcony area at Crozet Baptist Church as a “masks only” seating area during Mass, although those who choose to wear a mask are not required to sit there. We appreciate your continued patience and understanding, and we will keep you updated with any changes.
Dispensation from obligation to attend Mass lifted effective 6/27/2021.
We are a Roman Catholic community united by our faith in God and nourished by Jesus through both the Word and the Eucharist. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we strive to meet the spiritual and physical needs of our parish family and community through prayer and the ministries of the Church.
